On March 4 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy organized the 1st/2026 Team Thailand Meeting, where Ms. Chonlatee Chanrachakul, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, welcomed Dr. Vilawan Mangklatanakul, a member of the International Law Commission (ILC) for the 2023–2027 term and former Ambassador to Vienna. Dr. Vilawan was invited as a special guest for a talk titled "Thailand’s Role in the International Legal Arena" at the Embassy premises.
During the lecture, she shared her diverse experiences on the international stage, including her roles as President of the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Chair of the 57th Session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). She underscored the importance of the "Rule of Law" as a firm foundation for international order, particularly for small and medium-sized states that rely on global rules amidst geopolitical volatility. Furthermore, she engaged in a Q&A session with representatives of Thai students from various universities who attended the lecture.
As the first Thai woman and first female international lawyer from ASEAN elected to the ILC, Dr. Vilawan expressed her commitment to bringing regional perspectives into global legal codification. She also shared her professional philosophy of being a "diplomat first and lawyer second," emphasizing the use of dialogue to maintain sustainable international relations.
